Reclaim Your Health! Reclaim Your Life
Know Your Enemy
The key to winning any battle, and make no mistake, your immune system is a silent, sophisticated army that wages war for you every minute of every day, is to know what you are fighting against. Additionally, you have to ask yourself, “What is the worst case scenario if I lose?” Now that is a road I really don’t want to go down because I think we all know the answer.
So let’s start here by indentifying the micro-organisms, or pathogens, whose only mission is to make their way into your cells and wreak havoc in the form of illness.
Most pathogens have antigens. The antigen is the part of the pathogen that allows the immune system to identify it as a foreign invader and mount a response.
There are five pathogens that are the most common. You will, most likely, recognize the names but not necessarily know exactly what illnesses they are responsible for.
First on the list is BACTERIA. Bacteria are living, one-cellled organisms. Under a microscope, they look like balls, rods, or spirals. They are everywhere and are so small that a line of 1,000 could fit across a pencil eraser! Most types don’t make you sick. Many are helpful. Some of them are necessary to digest food, destroy disease-causing cells, and give the body needed vitamins. Bacteria are also used in making healthy foods like yogurt and cheese.
But it’s the infectious bacteria that can make you ill. They reproduce quickly in your body and many give off chemicals called toxins, which can damage tissue and cause illness. Examples of infectious bacteria are streptococcus, staphylococcus, and E. Coli.
You can thank BACTERIA for diseases such as pheumonia, staph infections, and strep throat.
