Reclaim Your Health! Reclaim Your Life

Now your skin doesn’t work alone.  The hair, eyelashes, sweat, and tears all  inhibit microbial growth and aid in washing invaders away also.

The mouth and nose join in the fight here as well.  Did you know that saliva isn’t just water.  It’s teeming with antimicrobial and antiviral compounds.

Have you ever heard of Cilia?  Well, now you have.  Cilia are hair-like projections throughout the respiratory system – nose, lungs, etc.  They move in a rhythmic fashion that moves microbes up through the throat so they can be coughed or sneezed out.  If they are swallowed, they (hopefully) exit in the bathroom.

Next up in the Innate Immune System is the digestive tract.  There your defenses consist of stomach acid and mucus in the intestines.  This mucus lines the organs to prevent invaders from getting into your tissue and veins.

This is most definitely an ingenious system but, nonetheless, unwelcome visitors do occasionally get through.

When that happens the Innate Immune system releases a variety of cells to identify and kill the invaders.  Leading the charge here are your white blood cells (leukocytes).  They are your primary defense.  Even though leukocytes are only about 1% of your blood you wouldn’t survive without them.  That’s how important they are.  They move through your body like watchmen.  When an invader is spotted, they multiply and call in other cells for back-up.  Then they all attack!
